Regularization of Spontaneous Settlements

This Building Issue aims at highlighting ways to regularize spontaneous settlements. First one must decide if the settlements should be upgraded, or if basic conditions are so unfavourable (topography, natural risks) that people must be moved. When it is decided to regularize an area, it is important to use the available resources in the best possible way with respect to legalization, installation of infrastructure, physical restructuring to improve street networks, housing improvements. The study presents general considerations and practical recommendations based on case studies in Bolivia, Chile and Peru.
